The Dating Series
In the Dating Series, a personal online dating foray served as the impetus for exploring the modern relationship and some of the essential questions faced by many in the daunting realm of cyberspace romance. The exhibit elucidates such questions as how to move beyond the superficial to an actualized potential for intimacy. Another work tackles the issue of how to manage online dating’s inherent prospect for experiencing exponential rejection. In the quest for the elusive “love factor,” what is revealed in an individual’s criteria for the perfect man or woman as translated by “search criteria?” The phenomena of online dating and social media networking are here to stay. Their many-faceted social and cultural effects are as complex and intricate as the layers in these probing and playful works of art.
The Wedding Series
The Wedding Series project punctuated a recent divorce experience with a big question mark. What is romance, what is love, and what does “happily ever after” even look like? “Beauty, Happiness and Myth,” as conceptualized and interpreted in these eight pieces of art, draws on personal and societal motifs in the collective mind of the Western woman, from early myth, to our mothers’ experience and our own cultural surround. The romantic idea of “The Wedding” is celebrated and adorned with wishes and hopes, belief and expectation. The many layers of meaning and complexity of romance and love are revealed in expressions of feminine expectation and help to undress the emotional uncertainty in every relationship and the hopes that also lie within it.
